Project One - Rationale

Biomimicry or biomimeties is the examination of nature, its model, systems, processes and elements to emulate or take inspiration from in order to solve human problems. This assignment asks us to design a bioinspired domestic storage system in medium/high density living areas. Based on the brief, I designed a coat rack which is inspired by the growth situation of the heliconia bihai flower. Heliconia bihai of the heliconiaceae family is an erect herb. It is native to South America, especially Brazil and Guianas. Its flowers are grown upwards and on the same plane with the gorgeous shapes. Due to its special growth situation I decided to mimicry it on my own design, which is the coat rack with moveable arms. This should be more convenient and safe for users, so people will not get hurt by the arms protruding from the rack. I considered about the shape of my product especially how to arrange the arms. By deciding how much arms will be put on the rack, I did some reviews to my friends asking how much they would like to have. After that I got the data and decided to do eight arms. The arms holders are cross shape, and they are not overlapping, so that each clothes can easily hooked without any obstructs.  And one of the difficult parts is to design the arms’ shape that they are moveable. The other one is using blue foam to do the model and paint on it.
The material I will use for my product is polypropylene. Since polypropylene is resistant to fatigue, most plastic living hinges are made from this material. And it is strength enough to hold clothes.
The colours that I choose to use on my coat rack are racing green and chardonnay. These two colours shows elegance that the coats rack could be a kind of decoration.
