Video Reflection

"How it's made" is a documentary program showing how common, everyday items are manufactured. And "Giving packaging a new life" is the documentary programs show structure of wastes and how these different waste is recycled. These videos are really interesting and the manufacture processes looks like magic for me. I never know producing these common items will be with much of technologies and processes; everything is regular and very detail. Since recycling is getting more and more important and wastes are one of the serious issues around the world, people try to figure out how to recycle such as most materials will be sent back to the factories to create the new recycled product.

-Cardboard boxes, this material was born by accident in 1870s. From building the cardboard to cut into shape, from folding machine folds the shaped-cardboard to printing each color on the board.

-Packaging tubes. This is very common in our life, such as toothpaste, blue, and skin cream. The package is made from aluminum, as it is foldable and lightweight.

-Tetrapak. This is a recyclable material mix with cardboard and aluminum, it can be used for foods packaging since it is safe for it and without refrigeration. The packaging gives products a long shelf life because it's special layers.

-Aluminum. They can always be recyclable and melted down. Also they have lightweight, so highly used for food packaging. The same as how to build a cardboard box, building aluminum can will experiences many steps from rolling the aluminum sheet.

-Plastic. It is the recycling materials and number one material for packaging.

-Glass. This is a complicated material to recycle but with easy to foam the shape.

Since we are also doing the new project about packaging, I think as a designer it is very important to think about what type of materials are suitable for making packaging. Since, different materials have their own feature, what is suitable for food packaging, what can making the pills packaging, this what the right thing that a designer should do not only draw the concept, make it looks like functional. We’d to solve problem within the society. The other hand is the cost of packaging; this is also required to make the right decision. Since there is the whole system for selling a product, so transportation is the point we need to concern about while doing the packaging project.
